For over two years now, the world has been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. Like many viruses, the long period of time it has been active has allowed it to mutate into new variants. While most mutations do not become widespread or are overshadowed by the original virus, there is always a risk that a new variant can pose a different or more dangerous threat. Earlier in 2021, the Delta variant reignited concern surrounding the pandemic, and it appears that the new Omicron variant is having a similar effect. While it is not certain whether or not the Omicron variant has made it to the United States, many people are worried about how it could spread if it did.

What Is The Omicron Variant

According to the World Health Organization, the Omicron variant is a “variant of concern”. The reason for this concern is that like the Delta variant before it, the Omicron variant appears to spread much faster than the original COVID-19 virus. In fact, since the Delta variant started spreading a majority of COVID-19 cases in our country have come from the Delta variant. It is estimated that the majority of today’s cases are caused by the Delta variant. Because of this, health officials are concerned that if the Omicron variant makes it to our country it will increase cases here.

How Do You Disinfect Surfaces For COVID-19

The most important thing we can all do is continue to be vigilant against COVID-19 in all of its forms. Washing our hands, wearing masks in public spaces, getting vaccinated, and cleaning surfaces can go a long way in preventing the spread of the virus. One important method for preventing COVID-19 from spreading is disinfecting high-contact surfaces in public spaces. Handrails, doorknobs, elevator buttons, and similar surfaces should be cleaned regularly with disinfectant. The CDC and other health organizations have published lists of disinfectants that have been proven to destroy COVID-19. Using these methods is the best way to protect individuals in the workplace or tenants in apartment and condo buildings.

Are Disinfectants Effective Against Variants?

At this point, there has not been sufficient testing to know which cleaning products are strong against the Omicron variant. However, both the World Health Organization and the CDC have recommended that the same products they listed for COVID-19 be used for all of the variants. At this point it is still uncertain whether or not the Omicron variant will spread to America, however, the Delta variant already has. The best option for disinfection is to use CDC recommended products or work with a team that has those products on hand.
